Spaced repetition for entrance exams: timing beats volume

Most entrance-exam students lose marks not on topics they never studied, but on topics they studied and then forgot. Spacing revision against the forgetting curve is the highest-leverage change most aspirants can make to how they study.
What is the forgetting curve?
Memory research going back to Ebbinghaus shows that retention of newly learned material decays rapidly at first and then more slowly — most forgetting happens in the first days after study, not the last weeks before the exam.
The practical consequence: a chapter studied once in August and untouched until January is largely gone by January, no matter how well it went in August.
Why does spaced revision beat cramming?
Each time you successfully recall something just as it is about to fade, the memory is re-encoded more durably and the next review can come later. Spacing reviews out — days, then weeks — produces far more retention per hour than the same hours spent in one block.
Cramming feels productive because material is fluent while it is fresh, but fluency during study is a poor predictor of recall weeks later in an exam hall.
How do you apply spacing to PCM/PCB preparation?
Revise by recall, not rereading: attempt questions or reconstruct the concept from memory first, and only then check the source. Recall practice is what resets the forgetting curve; passive rereading barely does.
Schedule returns to each topic at increasing gaps, and let your accuracy decide the gap — a topic you aced can wait weeks, a topic you fumbled needs to come back within days. High-weight areas (Biology for NEET/PCB, Mathematics for PCM) deserve the tightest loops.
