Silly mistakes: a taxonomy and the fixes that stick

'Silly mistake' is where marks go to die — the label feels like bad luck, so nothing changes, and the same errors repeat in every mock. They are not luck. Careless errors cluster into a handful of types, and each type has a specific fix.

Why do silly mistakes deserve their own analysis?

In a negative-marking exam a careless error is a double hit — the mark you lost plus the penalty — and unlike a concept gap it costs you on questions you effectively knew. For a well-prepared candidate, careless errors are frequently the largest single leak in the total.

Calling them silly hides the pattern. Log them for a few mocks and the same three or four shapes appear, which is exactly what makes them trainable.

What are the main types?

Misreads: answering the question you expected — missing a NOT or an 'incorrect statement', giving the value the question did not ask for. Slips: sign errors, unit conversions, powers of ten, arithmetic done in the margin under time pressure.

Transfer errors: solving correctly on paper and marking the wrong option, or filling the answer against the wrong question number. Option traps: choosing the intermediate value the paper deliberately lists — the distractor that matches your work one step before the answer.

What fix does each type respond to?

Misreads: underline the ask — the actual quantity and any negation — before solving; it costs two seconds and removes the largest category outright. Slips: carry units through the calculation and sanity-check the final magnitude; an answer with wrong dimensions or absurd size announces itself.

Transfer errors: mark the option immediately after solving, never in a batch at the end. Option traps: before marking, reread the ask once and confirm your value answers it — the trap almost always matches a step, not the question.

How do you make a fix actually stick?

One habit at a time, installed in mocks. Pick your most expensive error type from the log, apply its ritual for the next two or three mocks, and track just that count. When it holds near zero, move to the next type.

The count is the point: 'be more careful' is not a plan, but 'misreads: 4 → 1 → 0 across three mocks' is a habit visibly installing. Under exam adrenaline, only rituals practised in mocks survive.
