NEET vs MHT-CET PCB: which exam counts where

Maharashtra medical aspirants usually face both NEET and MHT-CET PCB. They overlap heavily in content but differ in pattern, marking, and — most importantly — in which admissions each score can unlock.

What is each exam for?

NEET is the single national entrance for MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, veterinary, and allied health programs across India — MBBS/BDS admission anywhere in the country runs through NEET.

MHT-CET PCB feeds Maharashtra's pharmacy and allied-science admissions — B.Pharmacy, Pharm.D, and agriculture and related programs — through the state's admission process. AYUSH programs such as BAMS and BHMS are NEET-based, not CET-based.

How do the patterns differ?

NEET: 180 compulsory questions over 3 hours — 45 Physics, 45 Chemistry, 90 Biology — with +4 for a correct answer and −1 for a wrong one, for 720 marks.

MHT-CET PCB: 200 MCQs over 3 hours — 50 Physics, 50 Chemistry, 100 Biology — at +1 per correct answer with no negative marking. The no-negative rule alone changes attempt strategy completely: in CET you attempt everything; in NEET a wild guess has a real cost.

Do they use the same syllabus?

The content overlap is large but the reference base differs: NEET tracks NCERT Class 11 + 12 nearly line by line, while MHT-CET follows the Maharashtra State Board syllabus with roughly 80% weight on Class 12 and 20% on Class 11.

In practice, preparing NEET-first with NCERT covers most of CET PCB's ground, and the CET-specific delta is mainly emphasis and question style — speed-oriented single-mark MCQs rather than NEET's deeper four-mark questions.

Can you prepare for both at once?

Yes, and most serious Maharashtra aspirants do. The efficient split is: build concepts and depth on the NEET/NCERT track, then add CET-specific timed practice for speed and the no-negative attempt-everything style.

Biology deserves priority in both — it is half the paper in each exam (90 of NEET's 180 questions, 100 of CET PCB's 200), so Biology accuracy moves both scores at once.
