Active recall vs rereading: study methods that survive the exam hall

Rereading a chapter feels productive because the material feels familiar. But familiarity is not retrieval — and entrance exams only pay for retrieval. Active recall is the single best-evidenced upgrade to how most students study.

What is the difference between recognising and recalling?

Rereading trains recognition: the material looks familiar when it is in front of you. An exam demands recall: producing the formula, mechanism, or fact with nothing in front of you but the question.

Decades of testing-effect research show the same result — students who practise retrieving material outperform students who spend the same time re-exposing themselves to it, and the gap widens as the exam gets further from the study session.

Why does rereading feel better than it works?

Fluency: the second pass through a chapter reads smoothly, and the brain misreads that smoothness as knowledge. Recall practice feels harder and slower precisely because it is doing the work rereading skips.

That difficulty is the point — effortful retrieval is what strengthens the memory. A study method that never feels difficult is usually not changing anything.

How do you convert study time into recall practice?

Close-book first: after studying a topic, write down everything you can reconstruct — definitions, formulas, mechanism steps — before opening the book to check. The gaps you find are your actual revision list.

Question-first revision: revise a topic by attempting its questions cold, not by rereading the theory first. Wrong answers route you back to exactly the theory you need, and right answers double as spaced retrieval practice.
